Xiu Yun was a project I completed during Chien-Chi Chang’s photography workshop in Taipei. My mother has worked in our family’s garment factory since she was very young, repeating the same tasks day and night. The factory was also an integral part of my childhood, and I have always wanted to document my mother’s presence there—her work and her routines.
For this project, I asked my mother to take apart one of my shirts and sew it back together using a sewing machine. During this process, I captured around 250 images, all of which I printed and displayed in a continuous sequence, stretching from the gallery entrance down to the basement exhibition space. The repetitive imagery reflects the monotony of her work, yet it was through this tireless and repetitive labor that she provided a stable and nurturing environment for her three children to grow up.
